Ownership

Yes, there is currently no laws against owning Night Vision devices in Australia.

However, while ownership is lawful, the end-use of night vision and thermal imaging equipment may be subject to restrictions depending on the circumstances and jurisdiction. As laws vary between jurisdictions and can change over time, users should ensure they understand and comply with all applicable legislation relating to their intended use.

Currently, Image Intensifier Tubes are regulated under DEC (Defence Export Controls) DEFENCE STRATEGIC GOODS LIST (DSGL) & CUSTOMS (Prohibited Exports) require a permit or license to export without facing a fine or other penalties.

Modern night-vision devices often use image intensifier tubes (IITs), which magnify available light and convert it into a visible image. Although some of the light they detect may fall within the infrared range, these systems are analog and provide a live view of the scene rather than capturing it with a conventional camera.

Digital night-vision cameras are also available and can be entertaining to use. However, consumer-grade digital systems may produce limited results in very dark environments unless they are paired with an infrared illuminator or another light source.

Image intensifiers do not create light from nothing. They amplify the light that is already present, so their performance depends on the surrounding conditions. If there is virtually no available light, the tube has little or nothing to amplify, and the resulting image will be extremely poor or completely absent without infrared illumination.

Proper handling and routine maintenance will help protect your Denied Systems night vision equipment and maintain reliable performance over its service life.

Light Exposure

Night vision should primarily be operated in low-light or dark environments. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, high-intensity artificial lighting, lasers, or other concentrated light sources, as these may damage the image intensifier tube.

Keep objective lens covers or daylight filters fitted when handling or storing the device during daylight.

Battery Care

Remove batteries before long-term storage to reduce the risk of leakage or corrosion.

Inspect batteries and contacts regularly. Do not use batteries showing signs of swelling, leakage, or damage. We recommend using quality batteries from reputable manufacturers.

Battery contacts can be carefully cleaned with a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Allow the compartment to dry completely before installing a battery.

Cleaning

Optics, remove loose dust with a lens blower before gently cleaning with a quality microfiber lens cloth or lens pen. Avoid excessive pressure or abrasive materials.

Housing, wipe away dirt using a soft cloth or brush with a mild cleaning solution where required. Avoid harsh solvents and ensure the unit is completely dry before storage.

Battery Compartment, keep contacts clean, dry, and free from dirt or corrosion.

Storage and Inspection

Store night vision equipment in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and moisture. Remove batteries when the unit will not be used for extended periods.

Periodically inspect seals, O-rings, lenses, controls, and battery contacts for wear or damage.

For internal servicing, nitrogen purging, leak testing, optical alignment or repairs, contact Denied Systems or a suitably qualified night vision technician.

Correct care and storage will help preserve image quality, reliability and the operational life of your night vision equipment.
